For a world as diverse and beckoning ,Kantara has been praised time and again for its re-exploration of regional aspects that often remain under represented in global cinema. The native word “Kantara” translates to “mystical forest” and fittingly enough, the film is set against the backdrop of a village near a forest in the coastal region of Karnataka, India. Directed by Rishab Shetty, who also plays the lead role, the film explores the conflict between humans and nature, with themes that revolve and are built around local culture, tradition, folklore, and beliefs.
While attracting critical acclaim for its strong storytelling, captivating performances, unique visual style, intense music, and the way it delves into the socio-cultural aspects of the area it represents, it was quite impressive how Rishab Shetty managed to turn over his genius into writing, direction and even acting in a dual role, all in order to create a masterpiece. This genius also includes the portrayal of the indigenous rituals, the traditional dance form of Bhootha Kola, and environmental themes, which naturally resonate with audiences from different cultural backgrounds.
