What makes Meiyazhagan’s tale so timeless?

Forget about your family feud, here’s something that’ll really get you thinking. With two timelines that intercept a 22 year old gap, Meiyazhagan‘s central climax of a reunion and familial love probably accounts for one of the most heartfelt ones encountered on screen.

Co-producer Suriya had some wonderful words to share while talking about the film’s reception among Indian audience. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, he remarked, “A water bottle can be priced at Rs 10 or Rs 500. What matters is who is benefiting, and who should be satisfied? Why feel worried if someone is selling it for Rs 1000?”, referring to the movie’s financial success.

The spirit of nostalgia receives a typical nod through the film’s exploration of native Chennai and Kodambakkam, where the principal shooting took place.

For director C. Prem Kumar, the directorial marks his second movie after the release of ’96 in 2018. Commenting on the art of film making, Prem Kumar who also wrote the entire screenplay, in an interview with OTTplay, said, “It is unique, but the story was first written as a novel and meant to be published. I had Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth’s faces while writing it. Even otherwise, all my stories are first written as a novel, then I try to reconstruct as a script. In fact, ’96 is a bigger novel that has six chapters, while what you have seen is half of one of the chapters.”

“Even ’96 is not a love story but is based on these two characters. With Meiyazhagan, even though it is too early to reveal the story, it is something about how we might lose something so good in our life that shatters us too much and we might begin to not accept many other good things later. There will be a cycle that goes on and as we are on the receiving end at the most unexpected time, this film is a journey of that phase,”

The wholesome appeal

Did you know that Kamal Haasan himself sang some of the songs for the production? Seems as if not all of Prem Kumar’s attempts were in vain. Karthi and Arvind Swamy deliver compelling performances, seamlessly embodying their respective characters and captivating audiences with their nuanced portrayals.
