The thrill gets real: What do the actors have to say?
The Tamil word Raatchasan typically translates as ‘Demon’. In a film that carried similar spirits, actor Vishnu Vishal was observed to be at the top of his game and had no qualms with the psychological aspects that made his film stand out. For his interview with Movie Crow, he disclosed his personal opinion, saying:
“Unlike other films of the similar genre, Raatchasan will have no challenges between the protagonist and antagonist as such. It will not be a very simple hero versus villain sort of a movie. It has different layers backed up by good performances and top technicalities. “
“The villain will be doing his own thing and will be seen attacking what the hero wants to save. It is going to be a film that women and children have to watch for the social message that has been touched upon. Also, Raatchasan will be a less gruesome movie with the same impact of an out and out psycho thriller. Hence the family audience can watch it as it is not visually disturbing but carries forward the thrill at every instance.”
Raatchasan is sure to send goosebumps your way! Yet, it is the interpersonal relationships surrounding main character Arun that enhance the narrative tension, particularly his bond with his love interest, played by Amala Paul. Their chemistry juxtaposes the grim realities faced by Arun, allowing for moments of vulnerability amidst the darkness of his investigations.
The supporting characters, including Arun’s mentor and colleagues, further enrich the storyline, showcasing diverse perspectives on morality and justice within the context of their professional and personal lives.
Diving into Raatchasan
Playing the role of an antagonist comes with a lot of ups and downs. What is even more significant is the ability to stay calm while shooting sensitive scenes. For actor Vinod Sagar who plays the role of Inbaraj in the movie, it was a substantial experience. In an interview with Onmanorama, he revealed:
“When I got out of the theatre after watching the movie, I saw that people were angry at me. Some of them were even screaming at me and they looked like they would hit me. But I felt happy hearing all those. It meant that my character has moved them. To be honest, it was when I heard them scream at me that I heaved a breath of relief. The role that came to me because I asked for it, turned out well.”
While we were filming, I never imagined that my character would create such overwhelming reactions in the theatres. I never felt that we were filming such intense scenes. I was very cool on the sets and did my job with a calm mind. Though everyone was scared of me when they saw me on screen, the set was lively and full of fun,” he further explained.
Critical reception and a large number of reviews of Raatchasan were instrumental in bolstering its reputation, with many viewers highlighting its exceptional screenplay and direction. The performances, particularly by the lead actor Vishnu Vishal, received accolades for their depth and authenticity.
Each performance in Raatchasan contributes significantly to its emotional depth, allowing the audience to engage with the characters’ struggles and dilemmas. Ultimately, the combination of strong character development and exceptional performances weaves a gripping tale that accentuates the film’s suspenseful nature and make it a watch to remember!
